Chemical peeling is a common office procedure where one or more chemical agents are applied to skin for controlled exfoliation of the epidermis and/ or dermis. It gives excellent results in properly selected cases of hypermelanosis and photoaging.
Q. How does it works?
A. Chemical peel works by causing:
i. Coagulation and precipitation of proteins leading to degeneration and destruction of epidermis and dermis.
ii. Induces an inflammatory reaction and activate mediators which leads to new collagen and matrix production.
iii. Decrease melanin production by inhibition of tyrosinase.
Q. What are indications of chemical peel?
A. It is useful in:
1. Acne / post acne hyperpigmentation.
2. Dyschromias like melasma, freckles.
3. Aesthetic like dilated pores, fine wrinkle, actinic damage.
Q. Any complication with chemical peel?
A. It can cause persistent erythema, dryness, peeling of skin and very rarely hypo/hyperpigmentation.
Q. What all post procedure care to be taken?
A. 1. Avoid sunexposure and use sunscreen daily.
2. Use moisturizer daily for 3-5 days.
3. Avoid hot water, soap & make up for 24 hrs.
